Chapter Twenty-Seven
This chapter contains one of my favorite scenes in the entire book, and one of my most hated.

Hated first: The conversation with the girl from Corpus Christi is lame and unnecessary. It embarrasses me to even recall it.

Favorite: The conversation between Eric and Rebekah about the spark plug and the chunk of metal. Both of them have been carrying around a tiny piece of Maurice, both because they want to remember what happened. But while Eric hangs onto the spark plug as a reminder of how much he hates Felix and the NOS, Rebekah has kept her small piece of metal as a reminder of how she miraculously survived. Both characters focus on the same event, though one uses it to inspire faith and hope while the other uses it to fuel hatred.

Incidentally, I’d originally planned for them to go to a hostel, but changed it to a bed and breakfast at the last minute. When I was polishing this up, the movie Hostel was in theaters and causing a big controversy (because of graphic torture, gore, and nudity). So, worried that the word ‘hostel’ carried too much baggage, I switched it.
