Chapter Fifteen
In the various brainstorming sessions when I was revising Tangled Web, turning it into The Counterfeit, one of the topics that came up was that we needed exotic locations. It’s odd: some people I talk to really like that many LDS books take place in Utah, because readers can easily imagine what’s going on. However, another large chunk of readers has told me that they’re sick to death of Utah-centric novels. I was already setting this one in Washington, on the islands, but needed some other good places, too. England was an obvious pick for Edward’s house, since Wake Me had mentioned him living there. Paris was a necessity, since so much of the plot hinges around the history of the French Revolution.
Notice the first line: “England was pretty much like I expected.” I say this because I’ve never been there, and I had no reason to think it’d be any different from the pictures I’ve seen.
I feel kind of bad, too. I read forty seven books about Paris, and consulted with people who used to live there, but I put very little effort into the England chapters. Fortunately, they’re short, and mostly indoors.
